May 5, 2013 For thousands of years marriage has been considered to be between a man and a woman and not with same sex couples. State wide there are laws banning same sex couples from receiving matrimony crushing the hearts of these innocent citizens who are only asking for the same right as everyone else. The majority of the population believes that the legalization of gay marriage will have negative impact on the society. However does the government have the right to give marriage a definition? Who are we to say who someone should love? Homosexuality has been in our society for thousands of years and has doubled even more now in our century. It is now somewhat normal for to be gay. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which the gay community should be allowed to chase too. Gay marriage should be legalized because every individual has the same rights regardless of their sexuality. Slowly within the years the gay community has been being accepted and more citizens are on their side to fight for their human rights. The Human Rights Campaign said in one of their articles that there was nothing wrong with allowing homosexuals to have the same rights as heterosexuals. Matrimony in our society is the greatest way to honor a relationship. There is no difference between gay couples wanting to marry because they love each other as heterosexual couples do as well.

The homosexuality society has been fighting hard for their freedom of rights for many years and still continue to do so. Gays have been fighting for their right to marry since the early 1920s where gay activists have strived for the right to marry. In 1924, Chicago’s Society for Human Rights was one of the first homosexual emancipation organization in the United States. This organization was formed to protect the interests of people that the Declaration of Independence guarantees us as well as combating the public prejudices made against them.
One of the most memorable events in the gay community that happened was the Stonewall Riots. In 1969, in a bar called The Stonewall Inn in New York, the gay activist movement first occurred. In this time police would always raid gay bars. This is what happened one night at this bar and gays had had enough and acted out. Officers arrested many of the bar’s employees and a few drag queens. The gay citizens grew angry and started rioting on the streets throwing bottles and creating chaos. Police handled the situation that night arresting 13 people and four officers got injured. Officers severely beat two rioters as well. On the following night many more protesters gathered and rioted around Stonewall Inn again, starting a movement. This moment united the gay community to fight against discrimination.
In the U.S alone, only 10 states have officially legalized gay marriage which consists of Connecticut,
