Reading task- comparison of the video guide and the “where we going” article
In these text studied the first text is a video the guide of London cycle hire scheme and the second text is a news article about coach holidays and the topic is “where are we going”. The topic of the first text is telling us immediately that the scheme is to persuade however the second text’s topic is telling us there is problem as it is asking a question “where are we going”. Also the title of the second text has been said by a voice. The purpose of the first text is to mainly inform and persuade about the cycle hire scheme however the second text’s purpose is to complain and argue about the faults. The audience for the first text is 14-18+ but you can only purchase a cycle if your 18 and you can use the scheme if your 14. In the other hand the second’s text’s audience is adults as the article is more in depth and detail.
The opening for the first text is a person enjoying the open air and the person suddenly needs to be travelling quicker. This is piece of bit is done in the video and it tells us a story as well as it gives a solution to a problem on streets of London. The opening is also a voice over as someone is saying that in the video. Already in the opening the writer has tried to persuade the audience who is watching this video. The opening of the first text also shows a visual humour which you can hardly see in written guides. In the other hand the second text’s opening shows more on the factual and historical events. This quote shows the factual and historical event (“vehicles speeds are nothing like todays unlike the vehicles used in the 1930s and 1940s.”) In this text the person is talking about the factual and historical information as well as his opinions. The quote which shows opinion about the faults about his coach holiday is (“operators either pulled out of the business or decided that to compete”). This is also referred as a point because the person is referring to evidence as he says (“they need to up their quality”).
The first text is very informative as it talks about the safety, age restrictions and method of paying. This is shown in the video and its shows it nicely as you can see visually about the three things. “You need to be 14 to use the scheme and at least 18 to purchase access”. This quote is showing the evidence for the age restrictions. There is also evidence for the safety and method paying in the paper guide or the video. However, the first text is not in chorological order as it has a story line giving solution to problems on streets of London. In the other hand, the second text is in chorological order as the person is talking about his experiences of his coach journey and the faults in the hotels. The evidence of that this text is in chorological order is”our next holiday”. This quote tells us that it is in chorological order.
