During my work in the CCU, we had a “young” patient that we knew would evitable die in the hospital. The young man had been a frequent patient in our unit due to congenital heart defects. During this last hospitalization, each and every organ system was slowly shutting down but the family was having difficulty accepting that their loved one was dying. The family refused to make the patient a “DNR” and he was coded multiple times over the month the spent with us.

The final code, I wouldn't necessarily say was a slow code but after the 4th dose of epinephrine was administered without response, the code was called. The staff had already discussed the “what if’s” over those last few days when we knew the end was near. An “if the patient codes
