The nickname “Gem City” has become an ironic moniker for some. Dayton faces a number of very serious issues: an abnormally high murder rate, a dishearteningly poor public school district, and a daunting heroin epidemic. For the last two summers I worked as a Downtown Dayton Ambassador. It was my responsibility to clean the city and assist all denizens and tourists in any way possible. I routinely dealt with the mentally ill, homeless, addicted, and poverty stricken.
