Gender Argument In Mj's Shoot Like A Girl

Throughout my reading of Shoot Like a Girl, I found myself trying to see MJ’s point of view on the gender argument, but often felt annoyed at her hypersensitivity in many instances. All in all, I stand with the author in that, gender should have no weight in qualifying for any position in the military. Qualification for certain positions must be based on merit alone.
MJ expresses her complete disgust with many American’s attitudes toward women serving in the armed forces. Throughout her life, she has been the recipient of degrading comments and discriminatory acts. In a few instances, she was justified in her thinking. For example, her horrific experience with Dr. Adams sexually assaulting her, Richard stealing a magazine clip from her to get her in trouble and possibly kicked out of the military, and her teacher giving her a letter of recommendation that painted her in a negative light. Each gender has certain strengths and weaknesses but overall they are equal. Speaking biologically, each gender has adapted to play certain roles. These roles have shown themselves more prominently due to the effects of natural selection. I definitely believe that women are equal to men in intellectuality. As the author stated, women have certain areas of combat they are more biologically suited than men. There are other areas that are more suited for men. The fact of the entire argument is that men and women have strengths and weaknesses that complement each other. I feel that having both genders in combat provides benefits that greatly increases the productivity and efficiency of the unit. Gender does make a difference in combat, but not a negative difference. Women and men should have equal opportunity to serve in any position in the
