In the book Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody it reveals a lot about women’s roles and gender roles during the 1960s and comparing them to today. Anne Moody does a good job at including these gender roles and the impact they had at the time and how being a woman in the 1960s was tough and being black add even more trouble to the mix. Gender roles in the 1960s compared to today is oddly the same and not much has changed, for example in the 1960s women were seen lower than men, women were seen as sex objects and women were seen only as kitchen/house workers and they couldn’t be seen doing anything relating or with a man. The first clear example of how women are seen just as a sex object is seen when Anne Moody is working in the restaurant that she says is filled of just men and only two other women, “Some insisted on being overly nice to me, in spite of the “hands off” expression on my face” (Moody, 187). This is a clear example of how women are seen as sex toys for men. Anne continues and states how they don’t stop eye balling her until another woman defends her and tells the men that she isn’t there to hook up with anyone but rather is there to work and earn money. Another clear and good example of how woman were objectified back in the day is when Anne Moody is in college and gets a boyfriend we see many examples of how men just think of these girls as sex objects and sex being there only goal in the relationship. “Damn Dave, all he could think of after we had gone together for a month was going to bed” (Moody, 268). This is a gender issue that was a big thing back in the 1960s and till today is a gender issue that a lot of women have to deal with when there in relationships. Anne Moody then goes on and talks about how her boyfriend tried to take advantage of her when he was all drunk, “he got mad and jerked me to him, kissing me hard. He started caressing my breast and breathing on my neck and everything” (Moody, 268). The gender issue of men trying to take advantage of woman seemed to be a problem in the 1960s and is still a problem till today since there multiple times were a man tries to take advantage of a woman. Next, example that we see of the gender issue of men seeing women as sex objects. Occurs when Anne Moody is deep into the movement and they are being sabotage by cops to stop it, “They evidently
