Gender Roles In Antigone

In the tragedy of Antigone, we see the portrayal of women in ancient Greece society by the actions of a determined woman named Antigone. Although women were not able to be considered or thought as a tragic hero, Antigone challenges that belief. As the main character herself goes against a man's order we see the traditional role of male dominance throughout the play. Playwright Sophocles, uses the characters Antigone and Ismene to show two very different perspectives of women at the time. Sophocles also provides a different insight by using Creon to present him as a typical sexist male by his actions and judgement.
