Though this story involves a damsel in distress; her overbearing Fairy Godmother swoops in to save the day with her own spin. Gender roles are flipped in this story as the domineering Fairy Godmother pushes around her son along with the King and Shrek. The Fairy Godmother has a grasp on King Harold’s life as they make a deal for him to marry the woman of his dreams; in exchange when he has a daughter she is to wed the Fairy Godmother’s son who is Prince Charming. While things are flipped upside down the Fairy Godmother takes matters into her own hands and starts to bully Shrek into giving up on Fiona. Men are known to be the domineering force while women are seen as submissive. But in this film the Fairy Godmother is seen to be domineering as the men are submissive to her. The first instance of this is shown after the Fairy Godmother learns that Fiona is married to an ogre. She then goes to King Harold to remind him what she did for him and what deal was made. She threatens to take away his fairytale if he doesn’t get rid of Shrek. Another time her true colors show is when Shrek went to her for advice as to make Fiona happy. But instead she rebuked him and told him that ogres don’t belong in fairytales. Once again when she had Shrek arrested she was showing him that she has power over him. In the final scene when Shrek busts on the scene to rescue his wife the Fairy Godmother grows infuriated saying “Didn’t I tell you ogres don’t live happily ever after.” Then using her magic wand to cast a spell on him.
