Gender Roles In The Film 'The Big Heat'

In the opening scene of The Big Heat (1953) the director shows a close up of a gun on Mr. Duncan’s desk. From that point forward it foreshadowed that the movie would be very dark and dramatic. The feel of this film was very mysterious it has the spooky feel with all of the shadows being casted on the characters. One scene that sticks out to me was after Debby gets burned from coffee being spilt on her and she is sitting in her hotel room. The only light coming through the room is the light from the blinds and it is casting a light on the side of Debby’s face. This felt very spooky. When thinking about this part of the film to me it foreshadowed the fact that Debby was going to kill Mrs. Duncan and try to kill Vince. When watching noir films …show more content…
There always seems to be one female character that has masculine qualities and seems to take charge. Debby had very masculine qualities. Although she did seem to need a man when she got hurt and she did want Sgt. Bannion to comfort her after the burn, she did show a new side of her that had many masculine qualities. When Debby’s went to Mrs. Duncan’s house and killed Mrs. Duncan I was very surprised. In many films women usually do not kill. This was a masculine quality for Debby because she did not need anyone to help her. She showed a strong and masculine side to herself. Debby showed bravery when she went Vince’s house and was getting revenge on what he did to her. This part of the film was very empowering and showed a role reversal because Vince seem really scared of Debby. Debby was very much in control and showed her masculinity. Film Noir is very unique category of film. These types of films always have strong leading ladies who go through a gender role reversal. It makes these movies ahead of their time because in many movies in the 1950’s women would not be playing character that were more masculine.
