Gender Roles In Tim O Brien's The Things They Carried

Gender roles develop within each person throughout their lives mainly based on the society’s view on each sex. These gender roles have changed over time, of course, and now there is more of a variety of stances on each gender. For example, in the short story “The Things They Carried”, Lavender states “ It had brought them to the war in the first place, nothing positive, no dreams of glory or honor, just to avoid the blush of dishonor”(pg 126). This meant men in this time period men enjoyed the opportunity, for the most part, to fight in the war because they wanted to seem courageous.
