With society’s progression, there are many aspects of a community that is being affected. It is imperative to recognize what the consequences of development may be and categorize each as a positive or negative outcome. For example, racism and sexism still exist today in large numbers. Certain individuals believe that there is such a thing as human or societal progress; however, we are still stuck in the past. An important issue in today’s society is that children are led to a certain stereotype, based on their gender, at a very young age. After gathering 50 boys and girls, varying in age, each set was further divided into a high and low gender stage and shown specific female, male or neutral oriented toy. Next, the researchers left the room and the children were free to play with any toy they desired. The low gender stage group female showed that they would not differentiate between any of the toys; however, the high level groups already had preconceived ideas of what toys they should be playing with. These commercials were viewed on different programs in order to obtain a more reliable and accurate representation of how society influences what children see on television today. The time blocks that was enforced in this research was between 8 PM and 10 PM. This block was chosen due to a preconceived idea that the commercials during the specific TV shows on that particular program would predominantly be aired for a male or female audience – in this case, female audience.
