It’s a few days before Halloween and children are racing around the city to find the best costume. Some kids will dress up as an action figure or go as a lion or some other animal that they love. But what about the chubby girl with dark skin who wants to go as Cinderella, Snow White, or Bella? She has found the best costume but there is something missing, something just does not look right. What is missing is the pearly, white skin and that perfect, every woman would die for, body. She sees other girls dressed up in the same costume and instead of thinking she looks better than them, she thinks that they are beautiful because they look just like the a Princess. Disney stories and fairy tales have been around for a very long time. When these fairy tales were first written, they portrayed the more conventional and stereotypical gender roles of that time. These roles included women cleaning, cooking being nurturing and caring. No one cleaned a house full of seven dwarfs faster than Snow White and never once did she question why these seven little men could not clean their own home. As of late, Disney has attempted to include more progressive princesses, however, many Disney princesses still adhere to traditional gender roles. My argument does not claim to solve the problem of girls wanting to be princess, nor does it place the blame wholly on Disney Movies. Instead, I am arguing that more attention needs to be paid to the role movies, and other cultural artifacts, have in shaping our perceptions of the perfect women and happily ever
