In society the male is naturally superior to females. Gender can be defined as an idea created by society where it is expected for the male and female to adopt certain beliefs or norms, as well as behave and speak a certain way. Furthermore, gender is also considered a social categorization. In the same way, defined by the Oxford Dictionary, a stereotype is “ A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing”. The goal of this paper is to examine the impact that gender roles and stereotyping have on women in sports. First, we will discuss gender logic created by society. Secondly, I will go into detail on female stereotypes in sport and also discuss what people consider being a feminine sport. …show more content…
Traditionally, it is expect for a woman to be wearing a dress, to do most of the chores in the house and to raise children. To add, because of their physique, women are seen as the weaker sex, physically and emotionally. Men were viewed as the strong and powerful figure that goes out and does all the dirty work while the women sit and look pretty. However, the idea of women being involved in sports was viewed as invading male territory. Gender logic in sports has created issues that seem like women get nothing and will always be inferior to men. For example when ever something is done correctly in sports it is done like a man, and whenever something is done incorrectly it is done like a woman. Furthermore, the ideas of gender logic have installed several barriers for women in sports. An example of these barriers would be that it often leads women to shy away from sports because they are considered as a masculine sport and because of the constant expectation for women to be lady-like. These gender roles created by society influences the participation in sports by women because it restricts them from doing what they want.
