Finally, another consequence of generational poverty is the loss of hope, and we see this in the symbol of Oscar and the Spokane reservation. Oscar is not only a symbol of power and the pursuit of opportunity, but also the hopelessness that comes with generation poverty, and we see this when Junior realizes “There was nothing I could do to save Oscar.” (10). When Junior accepts what Oscar's fate has to be, which is his father killing Oscar, he feels defeated and hopeless that he isn’t able to save Oscar. The symbol of Oscar is effective in portraying the loss of hope that accompanies poverty because the last bit of hope of being able to save Oscar is taken away from Junior due to not being able to afford to take Oscar to the veterinarian.
