In the novel A Separate Peace By John Knowles, the protagonist Gene has become incredibly dependent on the help of his best friend Finny, however after an accident Finny does not attend Devon, therefore Gene must learn to live without, Finny, his crutch; Frida Kahlo's portrait displays how one must adapt to living without those they typically depend on. Finny consistently motivated Gene to beat him, once his competition disappears Gene lacks motivation forcing him to become independent. The Two Fridas shows how Frida changed after meeting her husband and reconnected with her heritage after changing to fit in with American society. Both Frida and Gene transform their personalities to fit people's expectations or to not wound those they care
