Genesis chapter 4 tells us the story of the first recorded murder and death in the world. Cain was the first born of Adam and Eve who had also bore his little brother Abel. This passage tells us the story of Cain who’s jealously made him kill his own brother. In this paper, I will give a summary of the story, argue that this passage teaches us older siblings should listen more, and that we should be protectors of our families, and finally how Cain’s punishment for murder is equivalent to prison in today’s punishment. The story of Cain and Abel follows after the account of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, how they disobeyed God and sin has now entered in the world. As the oldest male sibling in my Filipino family in America, it is hard sometimes not to be proud to my parents. My youngest siblings look up to me and respect me, and my parents expect me to one day be the leader of the house. Therefore, seeing Cain seeing getting denied by his Father (God) while the younger sibling gets all the attention and gratitude is not usual. But instead of being humble, and listen to God’s wishes he gets angry and throws a tantrum. As the oldest sibling I was taught respect growing up and no matter how upset I was I would show respect to my elders and listen to their wishes even if it did not equal to what I wanted. For example, when Cain did not give his best efforts to give the right offerings for God he had no excuse to get upset. For one, usually the younger sibling in the household does not get much attention compared to the oldest so he should be lifting up Abel and praising him for making God the Father happy and taking a lesson or two from him to fix his mistakes not quarrel with him. Secondly, he could’ve easily gotten the right offerings that God was asking for but instead chose to shut down everything he says because the roles of acceptance of the big brother and little brother switched and his pride got in the way. Furthermore, Cain kills Abel out of jealousy and anger, which is definitely not what an older brother should be
