We should not engineer our offspring In the movie, GATTACA, the director is Andrew Niccol. The main characters in the film are Vincent, Irene, and Jerome. Vincent has always been fascinated with space, and he always dreamed of travelling into space. But because Vincent is a genetically inferior or invalid status, he could not go. Then he found out that he could purchase someone’s genes. Vincent later meets Jerome, who is a laboratory-engineered or valid status, so he purchases Jerome’s genes. Now that Vincent has Jerome’s genes, he can now go to space the program. The eggs and sperm are collected and are put in a lab dish. The embryos are transferred to the women, which then her pregnancy starts to begin. Scientists can also receive the egg and sperm to create an embryo. Genetic engineering can be a dangerous process. There are advantages such as preventing diseases; genetic engineering could also increase genetic diversity. The disadvantages to genetic engineering are unknown effective consequences and borderlines in some religions. Genetic engineering is not a decent idea to change your offspring, even if you think it will make your offspring healthier. …show more content…
When scientists tested Genetic engineering of animals, too many trials failed. This is too risky for humans to be around because the chemicals could be very dangerous to get applied on. Stuart Newman says’ “No amount of data from laboratory animals will make the first human trials anything but experimental.” This quote is saying that if animals are dying because of these experiments, then humans could to, and if it’s a success then it may only work once, and this would only be experimental. Another reason genetic engineering is not the right idea is that there will be consequences to the gene
