George and Lennie’s relationship in Of Mice and Men

In the book, Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have a special relationship. They string along together to several different ranches, causing positive and negative outcomes. Here is an explanation on the nature of George and Lennie, their motivations as to why they are traveling together, and those positive and negative outcomes.
First of all, the nature of George and Lennie’s relationship in Of Mice and Men, is a symbiotic relationship. Lennie is forced to look upon his friend George, and to depend on him throughout the story. Secondly, the both look out for each other in ways the other guys at the ranch do not. Lennie quotes “because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why.” Last, they never travel to another ranch without one another, and when one is forced to leave, the other gives up his job to go with them.

One positive aspect of their decisions to travel together is that they have each other to look out for one another. Another positive aspect is the bond they have created, while traveling together. However, in my opinion there are more negative aspects than there are positive. George is having to basically babysit Lennie because of the “bad things” Lennie continues to do. But, the most important negative aspect is the way the story ends. George has come to the conclusion of having to find Lennie before Curley and the other guys find him, because he knows that they’ll make him suffer. George doesn’t want to see Lennie suffer, so George forces himself to shoot Lennie in the back of the head. It was hard on George but he knew it was something he had to do for Lennie not to
