Don’t Forget, You’re Being Watched Orwell wrote a book called, 1984, a story based around a man named Winston. Just like his peers, he conforms to society until he gets an idea. He buys a diary to write all his ideas and feelings down. By buying this diary, he has already broken the law. By writing his thoughts and feelings down, he has agreed to surrender to death. His job is to delete the past and rewrite it without telling others around him that he is doing it. In the story, Winston meets a woman named Julia who rebels with him. A parent according to Somini has the ability to, “see if his son is texting while driving.” (Somini). In 1984, parents don’t have this ability. In fact, parents are afraid of their children in the story because the party uses the children against people who try to rebel. This is shown through the quote, “Power is tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.” (Orwell 219). The quote explains how with a higher power, the Party or parents, can control anyone. In today’s society, parents are able to take control over their children.However in 1984, parents are the complete opposite; they are so afraid of being accused, by their children, of going against the party that parents just conform to the parties society. The Party is able to use children to help them catch those who try to go against the Party because children are easily taught how to do things.
