In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, a world is created in three parts: Eurasia, Oceania, and
Eastasia. The governments created in these parts are far from similar and rather lunatic. In
Oceania, the government that rules there is called Big Brother. All the citizens who live in
Oceania are under surveillance at all times and are controlled entirely by the government. In this section of the world lives a man named Winston Smith who finds that the government is corrupt and doubts everything he is being told. Winston is in his late 30s; he is gawky and lean and has very thin hair that affects his physical appearance badly. Winston’s fondness begins to grow for Julia because of this because he realizes they are both rebelling against society and following their own rules as independent people. Even though there love shines significantly, there is a strong distinction between Winston and
Julia. Winston has a strong desire for ruining the government’s views; he dreams about it continually and discusses it with Julia as he feels he is comfortable with her. Julia revolts for no cause, just for her own personal amusement and attitude. She hopes to ruin Big Brother and end the government any possible way she can, but it is clear she doesn’t have the ability to get ones head around why she is doing this nor care. When Winston tries to explain his disbelief and contradiction to the government by talking about the party’s lies over a select group of men in Oceania when the men were supposedly out of the country for being disloyal, Julia does not give any attention to what Winston is saying and conveys that she could care less.
