In 1984 many of the characters had a pivotal experiences in the novel. But the characters who had the most pivotal change in the novel to me was Winston Smith. At the beginning of the book Winston is not sure about the certain powers the party holds. He was basically dead inside, he did what the party told him to do, he even did not respond to his surroundings. He had one hope and that was to find out what the truth behind the party was. As the novel continues, he became more unsure of how he felt about the party, he even became more unsure about that truth of Big Brother. When he get to the Ministry of Love, he started to feel this strange sense of rebellion. After the party tried to take away all of their feelings, Winston and Julia still feel some type of love towards one another. Winston has this sense of rebellion stays with him after all the tortured, until they send him to Room 101. Before all of this happened, he thought that he would be to handle their ways, and make it appear that he has changed his was of being against the Party. When he released from Room 101, he would finally know what the mistakes were when he rebelled thee first time and won’t make them again. Room 101 changed Winston from being a rebel and made it to where he would never rebel against the Party. They tortured him beyond the point of his mental ability. He faced many of his greatest fear of rats and being asked about Julia. They tortured him so bad he was wishing that Julia was the one that was getting the pain not him. But that was one thing the agreed upon once they had joined the Brotherhood, that he would receive all the pain. These pivotal experiences changes Winston throughout the story. He goes from feeling lost to finally being able to feel something. Although it may be against the law it’s what's best for him. He learned what it finally felt like to be someone other than what the Party wanted. He was finally part of something that made he want to be alive, the
