America has fought for its independence for hundreds of years. It started back when George Washington wanted to declare our independence from Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War. “The conflict arose from growing tensions between residents of Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown.” Before cars and airplanes were invented, people traveled on land by foot and on water by ships. George Washington and congress signed the Naval Act in 1794 to establish a permanent standing naval force of the United States, which eventually became the present-day United States Navy. Traveling on water made us vulnerable without protection. American shipping was the target of piracy. After we declared independence from Great Britain, our protection from the Royal Navy had ended leaving us defenseless. Most people argued that establishing a Navy would be too costly but the loss of lives and goods being transported were at stake. We needed protection at sea as much as we needed it on land. Today, we have a strong military defense system including the United States Marines, Army, Navy and Air force.
