After reading George Washington’s “Farewell address” I do believe that his advice is timeless. Many of the pieces of advice Washington offers the American people are timeless and can be applied to life today. Washington first tries to convince the American people that their independence, peace at home and abroad, safety, prosperity, and liberty are all dependent upon the unity between all the states. This advice still applies today because if there is friction amongst any states there will no longer be peace at home. If there is tension on homeland it is more likely a foreign land will take advantage of the situation as well. Looking to the future he gives the advice that between combined efforts and the resources of its people the union will stay as strong as it was then. This will also protect the country from foreign attack. Again, this is true today because as long as everyone is working towards the same objective it is more likely that it will succeed. Washington also explains that he supports the new constitutional government. He reminds the American people that it is the right of the people to alter the government to their needs. However, he further explains that the only way the Constitution should have changes made to it is through constitutional amendments. He also advises that violent takeover of the government should be avoided and it’s the duty of every member of the republic to follow the constitution. Lastly, one of the most significant things Washington touches upon is the growing divisions between the Federalists and Republican parties.
