“First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” These famous words said by Henry “Light Horse Larry” Lee, in a eulogy he wrote for George Washington. George Washington was not only a leader in many eyes of United States citizens, but also a good man to all. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 at Pope’s creek, Virginia, from his mother Mary Ball, and his father Augustine Washington. He was the eldest of his father and mother’s six children, opening up roles of leadership at an early age. George spent most of his childhood in Ferry Farm, a plantation on the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, Virginia. When he was eleven years old, the sad death of his father left George, his younger siblings, and his mother to manage the plantation. There, he learned many skills and values that he has showed throughout his life. There, he had a huge role in creating the U.S. Constitution, which is the plan of government that we have today. Not only was her the president of the Constitutional Convention, he was also the first President of the United States. Taking on such a huge role, Washington shaped the office’s future duties and powers alongside the first First Lady and wife, Martha Washington. He set precedents for future presidents including the two year term limit, and established systems that are used in government today.
