Today we see the domination of the two party system in our country which has lead to extreme division and polarization of ideals. I will argue in this paper that this two party system is against what the founding father wanted for this country. It is not beneficial to the growth of the United States and leaves out a portion of the population who’s ideals do not fit into one party or the other. In George Washington’s farewell address he warned us that political parties would lead to conflict and stagnation in American Politics. America did not begin with political parties and there never has been anything in the United States constitution discussing the matter. Our first president, George Washington, was not a member of a party when he became president nor did he join any while he served his two terms as president. Washington held the belief that political parties would cause problem and division along with stagnation. In his farewell address Washington said “Citizens by birth or choice of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than any appellation derived from local discriminations…You have in a common cause fought and triumphed together. In fact there is a whole section entitled “The Utility of the Union as a Safeguard Against Domestic Faction and Insurrection” James Madison wrote about protecting the country from “factions” but said it would might be impossible for political parties to not exist because of people having different opinions. Later on Jefferson and Madison would actually be the ones to start the Democratic-Republican Party and Alexander Hamilton would start the opposing Federalist
