During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln gave a speech in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania entitled the Gettysburg Address which is one of the most notable in United States History. The pivotal and gruesome Battle of Gettysburg was the motivation for the opening of the Soldier’s National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; where the Gettysburg Address was spoken. The Battle of Gettysburg, the Gettysburg Address, and the period following after it is integral to understand the causes and effects of the Gettysburg Address. The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War. There was a tremendous loss of life on the battlefield during the first three days of the month of July in 1863. This battle was important because it turned the Civil War in favor of the Union. The Union was under great leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg; their general was George G. Meade. Although Meade was still new to the command of the Union Army, he was able to lead the army to victory against the Confederacy despite a lack of moral originating from a recent string of losses. The Confederacy was in high spirits on July 1st after its victory at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia.
