In the book, Ghost Hawk, there is a main character named John; although, he is introduced in the second half of the book, he is the one who keeps most of his feelings inside. John acts the way feels most of the time, and stays to himself, and out of trouble. On rare occasion John stands up for what he feels is right, but later realizes his mistake. John is scared to tell his secrets to the people around him because he thinks they will consider him a heretic, or a witch because seeing a ghost is the devil’s work. This is proven in the book on the page (176) when the book states that “suddenly he was afraid again. No answer that, might not lead to his being hanged as a witch.” John had learned to talk the Indians’ language from the ghost of Little Hawk. This gets him into trouble throughout the book, including the example above when he tries to explain what the young Indian wanted. There is one part in the book where John stands up for his beliefs, and states his opinion in the meeting hall. This is shown on the page (226) when John stands up and says “Were there not innocent women and children in the village of people you burned alive.” this statement is the first time in the book you see John Wakely speak his true feelings about what the whites are doing to the native Americans. Every time John speaks his mind, he gets in trouble, and becomes more of a nonconformist. This is why John keeps so much from his friends and even from his family because he does not want to be an outcast at such a young age. I think John keeps things to himself because he has seen others thrown out of the colony for even less than what he is
