In the epic Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu each have characteristics that make them an epic hero and a foil character. The epic hero of the story is Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk. As he becomes out of control the gods create a foil character, Enkidu, to help balance out his negative actions. Gilgamesh is an incredibly brave and focused, yet is overtaken by the fear of death. Enkidu is chivalrous and compassionate, yet still naive about the human world. When put together, Enkidu truly balances out the negative actions that Gilgamesh does, bringing out the best attributes about Gilgamesh. “Enkidu feared his friend was weakening and called out: Gilgamesh!
