Gingival Recession I myself suffer from gingival recession, I never knew the cause, or I just didn’t listen to my doctor. Now after being in dental assisting school, know that the main cause was my brushing to hard and in up and down strokes instead of circular. That is not the only cause of recession, gum disease and tooth grinding are also causes. There are many other factors, but these are the 3 I will be discussing. Gum disease is the main cause of receding gums. If the plaque is not removed thoroughly daily with proper brushing technique and flossing, the toxins from bacteria irritate and inflame the gums. This inflammation starts to destroy the gingival and connective tissues, making them separate from the teeth. One problem with this inflammation is that it is painless, so I had no idea it was happening. Mild gum recession may be treatable by your dentist, by deep cleaning the affected areas. This is done by cleaning up the plaque and tartar below the gum line and smoothing the root surfaces so bacteria find it hard to reattach. Clenching or grinding your teeth, also known as Bruxism, happens to us all. However, the latest research sees our fast paced lifestyle have caused us all to deal with anxiety and stress and most of us release our stress while we sleep. Since we are asleep, we have no control over whether we do it or not. I worry so much during the day, it sort of surprises me that I would have anything left over to stress over. You can never regrow what you have lost, but now that I have a night guard, I have stopped it in its tracks. Your dentist will fit you with a mouth guard to protect your teeth and gums. When you grind your teeth, micro particles from the teeth fall below the gum line and create the bacteria that causes recession. Aggressive tooth brushing, pressing down hard on the toothbrush, or brushing the wrong way can cause recession. I didn’t get taught the circular motion brushing when I was younger, even today when I use my manual toothbrush, I have to remind myself. I have a Sonicare toothbrush, which has helped greatly, I only use it at night. Inadequate brushing and flossing allows bacteria to build up between the teeth and below the gum line. This leads to painless,
