The Italian Renaissance was a time of incredible intellectual and cultural progress, the time forever being synonymous with rebirth, revival and innovation. The influences of this period have been seen throughout all aspects of Western society ranging from military strategies to art. One of the artists whose works show evidence of the influences of the Italian Renaissance was Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. Coined “The Lost Genius”, Giovanni Castiglione’s artistic voice inspired by the innovation of artists such as Raphael, new application of mediums and use of Greco-Roman with Catholic Christian references reveal the influences of the Italian Renaissance in his art work.

Relatively uncommon, this gives an intimate window into Castiglione’s true genius. As stated in the exhibit, this shows Castiglione’s control over the oil and his acute awareness of the medium as he did not let it bleed through. One of these pieces, The Nativity with God the Father. bears witness to the advancement of Castiglione’s technique. His lines are softer with a greater range of tones, showing his growing confidence. With this, Castiglione began to play with limits, both politically and artistically. From here, his art begins to take on stronger characters and subsequently, messages. What is so notable about The Nativity with God the Father is the fact that God the Father is depicted. Not only that, but he is interacting with the child Christ.
