Giuseppe Garibaldi The Hero of Two Worlds, the unifier of Italy, a revolutionary and a friend of kings. All these things and more can describe Giuseppe Garibaldi. He was born in Nice in 1805 to a Ligurian family after the city was annex by Napoleon. Not much is known about his upbringing. His family was involved in maritime trade and by 1832 he was a certified captain in the merchant marine of Sardinia-Piedmont. The next year while in Russia delivering cargo he met a member of the liberal nationalist Young Italy society named Giuseppe Mazzini and he convinced Garibaldi to join the movement. In 1834 Garibaldi participated in a failed uprising and was forced to flee from Sardinia-Piedmont, starting his decades long exile and career as a professional revolutionary.

In 1841 the couple moved to Uruguay where they had four children and Garibaldi got work as a teacher and as a merchant. During this time he adopted his trademark look of a red shirt, a poncho and a sombrero based on the traditional wear of the Gaucho culture of his wife. From 1842-1848 Garibaldi fought in the Uruguayan Civil War on the side of the Liberal Colorados with his “Italian Legion” also known as redshirts. He would successfully defend the capital from enemy forces over that time during which he adopted guerilla warfare tactics to win against larger opponents. In Uruguay he was introduced to Freemasonry and became a Mason in 1844. With the outbreak of revolution in Europe in 1848, Garibaldi set sail to Italy where he offered his services to Sardinia-Piedmont to unify the peninsula, which was refused. He then crossed over the border to assist the Italian insurrection against the Austrians in Milan and after that
