Adversity to Success The word “success” has so many different meanings in how people see success through their eyes. Most people admire and look up to successful people, whether if they are our parents, a cousin, a celebrity in sports, and in any other fields. People come to where they distinguish successful people as someone they value meaning that those values are what people wish for themselves to become. In “Chapter one: The Matthew effect,” Gladwell describes that players, who plays sports, have certain advantages because of their birth dates. He then explains a year difference makes a distinction in the player’s abilities on the sports field. He then goes on to describe that the bigger the player is the more better he is and competitive which increases their chances to improve their skills. In chapter 4 of Outliers “The Trouble with Geniuses (Part 2),” Gladwell says Chris Langan is the smartest man in America, but yet he is incredibly poor, who lives with a farther who is always drunk and a mother who is always working, and he went to college but had to drop out due to some paperwork. Gladwell then contrast Langan too Oppenheimer, who is also brilliant, but he grew up wealthy and has a degree from Harvard, very successful. Meaning how we interact with people in school, work, and even around family members is the importance of our success. Being social is an adversity because without having social skills, talking to others, it is harder to reach the goal of having a happy, decent life. Everyone tries to have a happy life, but there are some people who have trouble in doing that because some are shy around people and some have speech problems which makes it harder for them to be around someone. Life is lonely without having friends. As a kid going to our first day of school we face the challenge of being around other children and that is when we start developing the social skills in talking to others. If a person does not start gaining or developing social skills at a young age then it is a major disadvantage for that person later in life. These people experience adversity by having to work harder to achieve the same social skills as those people that can easily talk to another person without having any problem. Having social skills can help people develop or gain job opportunities, and having friends, having friends is important in life. Many activities are more enjoyable when it is around with other people. Overall the success of this example is having a good life and being positive after overcoming the obstacle of gaining those social skills.
