A physicalist is the idea that everything which exists only exists in physical matters or substance. In the beginning of Armstrong’s essay, he begins to explain some scientific ideas behind the nature of the mind. Armstrong mentions the fields of molecular biology and neurophysiology to show that the nature of the mind is mostly physicochemical. This infers that is mind is a physical and chemical substance inferencing that the mind is the brain. Armstrong trusts science so strongly because “it is only as a result of scientific investigation that we ever seen to reach an intellectual consensus about controversial matters.” Being that science is the only discipline that allows individuals to reach intellectual consensus.
