The Global Citizens’ Initiative defines a global citizen as “someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community”. Similarly, I recognize that global citizenship is the idea that geographical location should not define a person’s identity. Mankind is interdependent and connected. To be a global citizen means that one is aware of the wider world, is willing to take action for an equitable world, and is revolted by social injustice. According to the ASU website, the education granted at Barrett allows students to participate in “internships, research projects, study abroad, and service opportunities”. These programs enable Barrett students to explore different aspects of the world, thus expanding students’ understanding of global citizenship. Those who identifies themselves as global citizens are not relinquishing other characteristics such as: loyalty to certain countries, religious beliefs and political values. Most people on the path to global citizenship are new to this journey. Their eyes are opened for the first time and their consciousness is awakened. Although connections are made internationally and people are working hard in their journey, people lack the sufficient tools, adequate resources, and support to act on their visions. This world’s way of thinking is colored by the past and trapped in history. Personally, my global citizenship starts now, with Barrett, The Honors College. Barrett’s signature “The Human Event” course will allow me to discover many more perspectives of this world. The school’s numerous internship opportunities will enhance my knowledge of becoming a true global citizen. Above all, Barrett’s travel program will allow me to experience first hand what it means to be a global
