Words can have many different meaning and effects. The meanings can all depend on who said it, how they said it, and when they said it. Sometimes we don't even acknowledge words until they are used in a way to catch our attention, and sometimes the way we perceive what a word means can change completely depending on what others say about it. Gloria learned that when she was in 3rd grade. Growing up, she had heard the word often. It was used in both a negative and positive way, but not in a way that singled out a certain race or certain person. It was negative when used for multiple people (not depending on skin color) who lacked self-respect. Gloria thought of it the same as any other word such as slackers. When this word was said to her in a derogatory way, then she stopped to think about its meaning. Her whole perspective of the word changed, because of the way one person viewed it and used it. The way the boy who sat behind her used that word and how it changed her perspective reminds me of how most people view where they live. They often take for granted the beauty they see because it seems to have always been there. For me, the large mountains, the snow, the large colorful trees, the rivers that follow dirt roads, the fresh air, and the ability to see the stars at night just seem to be there...nothing special. I take them for granted and want something better, but when someone comes from a city where there are no mountains, or snow, and the city's pollution and bright lights deny the people any chance of seeing the stars or breathing in fresh air, and truly admires the beauty and privileges of living in Vermont, that is when my perspective changes. That is similar what had happened to Gloria. The way someone else used a certain word and felt about it, changed the way Gloria did. It made her think of what was a positive term, as something
