The idea of success is achieved by the challenges and tasks that an individual has to conquer. Success can be overpowering to individuals that do not understand the true meaning of a higher power. A power that can be controlling, magical, and overbearing to some individuals. By being generous and amiable and individual will succeed to a greater power. To be successful does one always need to be compelled to offer assistance to others before taking care of oneself? Does valuable characteristics only appear from a selfless individual? The fairy tale “The King of the Golden River,” displays multiple occasions where “good will” will take an individual to a successful outcome. Ruskin is able to take character Gluck and display him as a noble and genuine individual. Gluck is beaten and starved in his original home and does not cause any confrontation about the cruel treatment by his brothers. Gluck is then moved into a new populated area and is demanded to continue unpaid work, and sacrifice a golden cup that he has always cherished. As a result of Gluck’s brothers entrapment he sets out on a journey to the golden river to find the answer to get his brothers freedom. With the challenges and risks he encounters while traveling to the river Gluck is able to be successful in finding the nourishing effect of the golden river. Immediately upon the arrival of the top of the river the reward is displayed to the valley. The dead valley is given life and shows the success Gluck has achieved.
