Everyone who has eaten a carrot has eaten a genetically modified food. Although this is the case for many other foods, people are still against the idea of consuming genetically modified food. Despite what people may think, there is nothing wrong with consuming genetically modified food, and it can actually be better than consuming non-GMO food. Genetically modified foods are overall better to consume and grow than food that has not been genetically modified. Genetically modified, or GMO, food is any food that has had its genetics altered from what nature has made it. What most people perceive as GMO food is food that has had genes spliced into them that alters one or more of its traits. Although this is true, GMO foods also include foods that have been bred selectively by humans. GMO food has been produced this way for thousands of years. Normally, rice is not able to grow in salty water. Because of this, people who live in such areas have to get their rice from other places, which can get expensive. However, with genetic engineering, scientists have created a rice that can grow in salty water, meaning that people who live in these areas can now grow rice (Utah). This eliminates the worry of not having food to eat, and saves money that would have been spent on transporting rice from somewhere else. Because of genetic engineering, people can grow food in areas it would not normally grow, reducing hunger and saving money. Although someone is full, it does not necessarily mean that they are fed nutriciously. With genetic engineering, simple foods can gain essential nutrients it would otherwise never
