Genetically Modified Organisms There are many pertinent issues concerning GMOs. A GMO is a genetically modified organism- usually found in food. These organisms undergo a laboratory process in which genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and put into the genes of another organism. The process of completing this is called Genetic Modification or Genetic Engineering. By doing so, they are altering the nature of the organism to ideally reap various benefits. However, I will tell you how the benefits of genetically modifying an organism does not outweigh the detrimental effects it is having on our country. GMOs are an enormous part of our American diet. They are found in what you eat because farmers have genetically modified their crops to keep off pesticides producing a better harvest for farmers. According to our handout, “Around 70 percent of processed foods in the U.S. contain genetically modified ingredients.” GMOs include soybeans, canola, corn, and milk. But those ingredients make up almost everything we eat. Animals that we consume are fed GMOs and so we are absorbing them as well. Unfortunately, once they are in soil in a

I could not tell you because GMOs are relatively new and there is no way to see the long term effect of them. However we are seeing a great rise in obesity and other food-related health problems over the last few decades that is more than likely related to GMOs. In our handout I read that there are reported cancer clusters due to their pesticide use. The United States does not even require the labeling of GMOs. It is absolutely absurd that we as a population are unknowingly consuming food that is potentially dangerous. These GMOs could cause cancer or even disease. Not only is it affecting us, it is also causing harm to our ecosystem, killing insects and animals that try to eat the GMOs. By disrupting our ecosystem we are destroying our
