Research Project: Goblin Shark The Goblin Shark has existed for over 100 million years, making it a living fossil. First discovered in 1898, this cold-blooded deep sea shark is a rare find. The Mitsukurina Owstoni, as the Goblin Shark is known to the scientific world, is a common shark, but it lives so far in the depths of the sea that only 50 specimens have been officially recorded. A Goblin Shark has a pinkish-gray color, a long tail, and long flat snout. The most interesting feature of a Goblin is the jaws that protrude out of its mouth, just like another face, when attacking food. This second mouth secures the prey and pulls it deep into the shark where it is consumed.
Like most sharks, the Goblin Shark is a carnivore or meat eater. Favorites foods include sea fish, crabs, and squid. Although the Goblin Shark eats 2-12 lbs of seafood per day, he can go up to a week without food and water. When hunting prey,

They are secure in mid and deep water zones of outer continental shelves and slopes. The shark is rarely encountered by humans, only when accidentally caught in a fisherman’s net are they seen. The impact they have on the region is unknown. It is doubtful it has any since Goblins have been around since prehistoric times.
Captivity is not an option for this shark. Goblin Sharks are seldom caught in the wild other than accidentally via fisherman’s net. A few who have tried can only keep these creatures alive a few days at most. Not enough is known about these animals, but these sharks can’t survive the trip to the surface.
Goblin Sharks are one of the sea’s mysteries. This creature has survived for millions of years, yet so little is known about it. For now, Goblin Sharks are okay living in the deepest places in the ocean. Let’s just leave them alone happily snacking on any
