The film, “God Grew Tired of Us” is a documentary about the lives of three of the “Lost Boys of Sudan ”, a group of around 25,000 young men who fled the wars in Sudan, and the hardships they faced during the Sudan civil war. In America today there are copious simple luxuries that people take for granted, luxuries that other people are not able to obtain. John Dau, Panther Bior, and Daniel Pach know first hand about the difficulties of not having such indulgences. They were faced with many complications along their journey, some of which were starvation, dehydration, disease, etc. People in today’s day and age do not realize how much of an affluence we live in, we take for granted so many things not realizing the multitude of people around the globe who do not even have running water in their homes. The men featured in this documentary have experienced in their day-to-day lives what it means to live without the simplicities of life that we sometimes take for granted. For example, when Dau, Bior, and Pach first left Sudan and came to America there was an initial culture shock as they encountered women driving cars, huge stores filled with food, electricity, and even showers. When the dinka men first arrived in America they seemed confused on how to use the escalator at the airport, which was amusing and unusual to the people passing by. Also, when they arrive to their hotel room they had to learn how to use all the electronics. Even turning on a lamp seemed impossible to the men at the time. The men also were able to actually take a shower, something that they had never properly done before.
