God is Timeless-Boethius
Summary:
Boethius starts this section by saying God is outside of time itself. Eternity is then compared to temporal time; temporal time and eternity are opposites. Boethius defines temporal time as "a fleeting transitory moment," meaning that time has a parameter outside of God's eternity (page 150). Eternity, then, has a definition of taking in time simultaneously as one who has eternal life; God would be an example. Boethius critiques Aristotle's notion that the universe is eternal because it is not simultaneously embracing all of time. Since the nature of the universe is not eternal, then beings cannot be eternal. Likewise, since God has eternal knowledge, He is eternal himself. Boethius then compares simple necessity

He reminds me of the Hegel readings and how difficult they were to grasp the important concepts. I had to read over the entire reading more than twice to understand the main points and arguments that Boethius was trying to make. The Aristotle example about the difference of eternal and infinite and if the universe is finite or not helped enforce what he was trying to argue. I agree that God is timeless, and beings cannot look at God linearly and parallel to the world. This brought up the question in my mind about the correlation with space and time. How does space and time affect each other? Does space and time affect God? Obviously not like the way space and time affects beings. I would not recommend this reading. Boethius, even though he was way before today's modern language, could make the reading a little bit easier to read and understand. College students are not philosophy experts like he was. All in all, it was a reading that provided more insight to a subject that I had not really thought about. Who thinks about God being timeless or the nature of the universe not being eternal? Boethius has some contradictions here and there, but his arguments made sense after I read them quite a few times. It was a good read for the class, and discussing this topic will be
