Spy, daughter, friend, worker, child, writer, acquaintance, student, these are just a few aspects to describe Harriet the Spy or Harriet M. Welsch. Harriet an eleven year old girl takes her hobby of being a spy and writing all that she views and hears seriously, while some consider it is child’s play, she sees her spy route and private journal as a job. Throughout the book and the movie, the audience is allowed to read or watch Harriet’s growth as a character, her personality, developments she makes, and changes that occur in her life. Although there may be similarities shared between the book and movie versions, there are major differences, which cause both to be unique. The most significant contrast between the book and the film is Harriet’s personality, which results in a different mood between the book and movie. Usually, people would agree that a book version of a story seems to have extensive detail, pulls in the audience more, and develops further than a movie. The book version of Golly is a quiet, conservative, and distant nanny; whereas, the movie version of Golly is a caring, talkative, and involved nanny. This causes an extreme impact on Harriet in two different ways. Book example. In the movie Golly acts like a mother to Harriet, so when it comes time to leave, Harriet’s world appears to stop. An example from the movie is when “Harriet stands outside with Golly while they wait for her taxi. When Golly is in the taxi and it begins to drive away, Harriet grabs onto the window and runs with it until she cant keep up.
