Our book Becoming Legal. Immigration Law and Mixed Status Families taught us about the lives of undocumented Mexican families in the United States from an ethnographic perspective. The author, Ruth Gomberg-Munoz, was able to apply ethnographic field work to an urban setting by conducting a longitudinal study using participant observation, interviews and qualitative research. She kept all her participants anonymous while applying historical context to the current state of affairs.
Ethnographic research is a complex process that can be accomplished if you are passionate, organized, thorough and non-biased. Considering a longitudinal study, an ethnographer must visit or interview their participants several times over the course of the study.
