Good Country People is a short story by Flannery O’Connor. This short story is about a girl named Joy who has one wooden leg. When Joy was 10 years old, one her legs was shot off in a hunting accident. Joy always had a grumpy attitude but Mrs. Hopewell, Joys mom, just push it aside because Joy has one wooden leg. When joy turned 21 she legally changed her name to Hulga. Hulga is an atheist and met this guy named Manley, who is a bible salesmen and supposedly a “good” country guy. Although, some people may seem and look like a good person but their looks can also be very deceiving. Manley tried to sell Mrs. Hopewell a bible but it did not work out. The reason why she did not buy the bible is because of Hulga, since Hulga is an atheist. “My daughter is an atheist and wont let me keep the Bible in the parlor.” Which the truth was she kept her Bible in her attic somewhere. Mrs. Hopewell does not want to get fooled by anybody and it seemed like she has a bad vibe about Manley but does not want to be rude to him since he is being “polite”. Mrs. Hopewell started to trust and like Manley when he said he has the same heart condition as Hulga and when he talked about his childhood and life story. “He was just good country people, you know,” she said, “just the salt of the earth.” …show more content…
When they were in the woods together, he took away her glasses and they were making out. He tells her he loves her and wants her to say the same back. They started talking about god, damnation and Hulga’s wooden leg. Hulga thinks he is not nearly as smart as she is. He asked if he could see her wooden leg but she reluctantly refuses to show it to him. Eventually, she ended up showing him her wooden leg and how to take it off and put it back
