In the story “ Good Country People” by Flannery O’Conner, the Main Character Hulga Hopewell’s name plays a significant role. When she was born her mother and father gave her the name of Joy Hopewell, which many would look at, that name and think of someone who is optimistic, it is more of a soft girly name. Whereas Hulga sounds more aggressive, Hulga changes her name due to the accident causing her to have a wooden leg. Both of her names symbolize a part of her personality. Hulga is very book smart she obtains a degree in philosophy. Although she has vast knowledge in her field her mother seems to think otherwise.
