Good Man Is Hard To Find Irony

In Guy de Maupassant’s short story “The Necklace”, the main character is a girl who is obsessed with the way she looks. When she finally gets the outfit she has always wanted she makes an awful mistake that will put her and her husband in horrible debt. In Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, a family is going on a road trip but the grandma is worried about a criminal, known as the Misfit, who is on the loose. When they run into the Misfit the grandma does everything she can to keep the Misfit from hurting her and her family. In both of these short stories the theme emerges in different ways. Although the two stories are about to completely different topics they come together and have similar themes. Irony is seen in both stories and is presented differently in each. In “The Necklace” the girl borrows a necklace from a friend. When she gets home from her husband’s work dinner she realizes she no longer has the necklace and she is forced to go buy a new one, which was 36 thousand francs.
