The 2005 drama, Good Night, and Good Luck, follows Edward Murrow and his team during the McCarthy era, as they try and fight McCarthyism. It stars David Strathairn, George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr., Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels, and Frank Langella. It was nominated for many awards, including Academy Awards for Best Movie, Best Lead Actor, Best Directing, and Best Writing. It was also nominated for Golden Globes for Best Drama, Best Lead Actor, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. This film covers the McCarthy era in the 50’s; the time period where the Red Scare was extremely prominent in the U.S. and Senator Joseph McCarthy became the most public face of it. The movie starts at a tribute in 1958, to Edward Murrow for fighting McCarthyism and then it flashes back to 1953. It then shows the newsroom and a group trying to figure out what to report on, but anything related to McCarthyism is too risky, since they don’t want to be blacklisted. They …show more content…
The film was pretty accurate to history, even the smaller details like Ed getting cut to five episodes at the end, and his constant smoking. Another accurate part was the huge influence TV had, and still has, on people, especially since it was still fairly new. One thing that is a little bit off, is the point of view, since it very one-sided and a little biased. This movie really made me realize the extent of the incidents that occurred during the Red Scare, because I didn’t realize how serious people were about it. I can’t believe that even talking about communism could label you a communist and this could end your entire career. It also makes what these people did even more amazing; they really risked everything. In general, it was an interesting storyline and a well-made film, but it could have been portrayed in a more entertaining and engaging
