Each Sunday that you and I gather here, we hear several Bible readings. The passage of Matthew 18, 15-20, Dealing with Sin in the Church talks about the actions we should take when someone close to us sins and who else we need to tell. As all of us gather here today, as Christians we are held and hold ourselves not to sin. We are told when we sin to go and deal with it ourselves. But what should we do when we see someone sin and they don’t take the appropriate action. That is why Matthew wrote this passage. As you hear or read all these different Bible passengers we are constantly asking ourselves what was it like before it was written, what was the world like when it was written and is it still relevant today. The anonymous author is said to be a male jew. He would have been torn between traditional and non-traditional Jewish values. The Gospel of Matthew is the first gospel to use “church” in its text. The text isn’t the work of a certain individual however talks about a particular Christian community, evidence suggests that it was a wealthy community as the Gospel mentions coins more than other Gospel texts. It also mentions nice, wealthy people that wear very presentable clothes. A major feature of the time before the text was the difference between Christians and Jews, with Christianity originating from Judaism. Whoever the anonymous figure was that wrote the gospel, he would have known that the issue of sinning was going to be a major problem in the future so he would have started to gather his thoughts. See when Jesus saw these issues he knew that they would be relevant for along as humans lived. The text in modern say society still has the same message although some minor things have changed through social evolution. One of these things would be just ignoring the person in the wrong. In today’s world you and I like to both sort it out so there isn’t any future repercussions or problems. But the main message of the text stays the same, that being not to sin and if you do and you don’t do anything about it privately there is consequences that we as Christians need to take. Matthew 18 15-20 should provide both you and I with a clear idea of what to do if you see a follow Christian
