While reading the text by Ojito, one begins to wonder what message does the death of Marcelo Lucero send to legal and illegal immigrants in the United States. First and foremost, the killing of an innocent man because he was not seen as the other town members and labeled a “beaner,” conveys the message of exclusion. Even though the U.S. prides themselves on past immigrant traditions, and advocacy programs have been established to establish more acceptable immigrant rights ¬even for those who are undocumented; this country still portrays a message of not only exclusion but also hate as well. Ultimately, making those seen as “outsiders” unwelcomed in the country. This idea of making those unwelcomed is seeded from deep-rooted fear. It is without question that the Latino population is growing in America due the increasing rise of immigrants entering the country. In Governing Immigration Through Crime, the concept of “white space” was presented. As explained in chapter eight of the text, “white space,” is when whites are more comfortable in the own area only if they feel as though they are the more dominant group regarding numbers, power, and leadership (Dowling & Inda, 2013, p.167). With the steady flow of Latino immigrants coming into the country can cause one of two things: lessen the number of whites in the country and increase the chances of Latinos coming into power and gaining leadership roles. Due to this, the Caucasian population feels as though their white space is being invaded and losing their grip on having the upper hand.
