Last Tuesday, I went to a film screening named as “American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs.” People who came to this film screening was mostly from the film major, whereas I also saw some Chinese American women attended the event. I think that all of them are interested to know more stories about American revolutionary and the film production. This film is a documentary that illustrates the life of Grace Lee Boggs throughout the period when she was involved in the African-American movement. I remember she said that “revolution is a beginning of something new when people could not continue with the old idea.” Her idea is to demand equality and justice in gender, races, and class.
Grace Lee Boggs just passed away last year in October. However, her story will still remain and continue influence more people. I would describe her as a heroine in the civil rights era. She was the only Chinese American that focus on civil rights and Black Power Movement activism. She was born in the United States, but her parents were immigrants from China. She always had conversations with young people, answered their questions, and enlightened them in a way that they never think before. In the Q&A session, Grace Lee, the filmmaker said that she was an incredible teacher that always gave Grace Lee a new insight about race, revolution, and many aspects. Her words are so intelligent and powerful that people who met with her will certainly get something from her. What I got from the film on last Tuesday is one of her quote, which states that “You don't choose the times you live in, but you do choose who you want to be, and you do choose how you want to think.” I really love this quote as it is like a candle that lights up the way for me when I was losing, when I was depressed.
